The way out

What replaces galvanized pipe

The permanent answer is a repipe, pulling the corroded system and replacing it with a modern material. Two options cover nearly every home.

PEX: the corrosion-proof route

Plastic tubing that can't rust, pit, or scale. Its flexibility means fewer joints and fewer wall openings during installation, a real advantage in finished 1950s ranches. This is the most common choice for full-home repipes we do in the area.

Copper: the metal route

Rigid pipe with a century-long track record. Some homeowners simply prefer metal in their walls, and copper handles exposed or outdoor runs where PEX can't go. Our copper versus PEX guide walks through the full tradeoff honestly.

What doesn't work: descaling or lining the old pipe. Those treatments can smooth the inside, but they don't restore wall thickness that's already corroded away. A thin pipe with a fresh lining is still a thin pipe. When the metal is gone, replacement is the fix that ends the cycle, it's exactly what our galvanized pipe replacement service is built around, and what our whole-house repiping team does every week.

Questions we hear

Common questions

Straight answers on galvanized pipe failure and replacement.

How do I know if my house has galvanized pipes?

Look at an exposed pipe near the water heater or main valve and scratch it lightly with a screwdriver. Galvanized pipe looks dull gray and stays gray under the scratch; the joints are threaded, not soldered. Homes built before the 1960s in the Lakewood area commonly have it.

Is brown or rusty water from galvanized pipes dangerous?

Rust-colored water from corroding galvanized pipe is mostly an aesthetic problem, but it signals the pipe walls are breaking down. If your home was built before lead-based paint and lead plumbing were phased out, ask your water provider about testing, very old systems can involve lead service lines, which are a separate, serious concern the EPA addresses in its drinking-water guidance.

Can you clean or line galvanized pipes instead of replacing them?

Descaling and epoxy lining exist, but they do not restore lost wall thickness, pipe that has corroded to paper-thin in spots stays thin. For pipe past its prime, replacement with modern material is the fix that actually ends the leak-and-patch cycle.

What pipe should replace my galvanized lines?

Most Lakewood-area repipes use PEX for its corrosion resistance and easier installation through finished walls, or copper for a rigid metal system with a long track record. Read our copper-versus-PEX comparison to weigh the tradeoffs, then call (562) 245-5416 for a recommendation based on your home's water conditions.

Should I replace galvanized pipe before it fails?

If you see brown water, weak pressure at multiple fixtures, or any galvanized line that is several decades old, a proactive repipe costs the same either way, the difference is whether it happens on your schedule or at 2 a.m. with a floor soaked.

End the leak-and-patch cycle. We'll inspect what's actually in your walls, tell you honestly how much life it has left, and lay out your replacement options, no pressure, no jargon.
